Big Strides for Little Forest School: A New Childcare Program Takes Root

Big things are happening for Little Forest School! In just a few months, we’ve made incredible progress toward bringing high-quality, nature-based childcare to our community.

First up—Little Forest School is now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit! That means we can accept donations, apply for grants, and continue growing this program through community support. And speaking of support, our volunteers have been hard at work. We’ve moved materials and supplies into the Manitowish Waters Community Church and started setting up the classrooms. Policies are in place, budgets are approved, and the Childcare Director position has been posted. Things are moving fast, and we’re feeling all kinds of grateful for the way this community has stepped up.

But wait—it gets even better. We’re gaining footing on a permanent location thanks to a generous donation of 2 acres of land, setting the future home of Little Forest School at 5779 US Highway 51 in Manitowish Waters. This spot is nothing short of perfect—tucked at the base of the tall pines, right along the paved trail system, and within walking distance of the Youth Center, Koller Library, Community Center, Playground Park, and GROW Gardens. It’s the ideal place for kids to learn, play, and explore. Strong kids come from strong communities, and we can’t wait to build partnerships that make the most of this incredible location.

So, what’s next? A lot! We’re working through the licensing process with the Department of Child and Family Services.  We’ll soon be hiring Teachers and Assistants. And we’re gearing up for fundraising and grant applications to cover operating expenses and officially open the doors to the Little Forest School.

In the meantime, we’re looking for community members to get involved. Here’s how:

  • Volunteers – we need interested individuals to join our standing committees: Board Development, Finance, and Fundraising.
